Phoenix Services, LLC provides responsive world-class service to steel producers around the globe, their services include slag handling, metal recovery and slag processing.  When they began construction of their new operations facility in Gary, IN they determined a 31 ft headwall which would support a live load surcharge from 86-ton trucks as well as a 15 ft high stockpile of slag on the top of the wall would be required.  The Reinforced Earth Company’s Reinforced Earth® retaining wall was selected as the perfect solution for the headwall due to its extremely high load bearing capacity.

RECo performed the detailed engineering analysis needed to ensure all extreme static and dynamic loadings exerted by off-highway trucks, operating within a few feet of wall’s face, were accommodated in the design.  Allowances were made for the significant horizontal pressures that are exerted at the top of the head wall structure.   The ground reinforcements consisted of RECo’s standard 50 mm x 4 mm steel strips which were designed to resist the extraordinary horizontal thrust that is especially critical during braking and discharge of the slag from the dump trucks.  Construction of the Reinforced Earth wall and precast coping topout, also supplied by RECo, was completed by Beatty Construction of Boggstown, IN.
